The news is full of stories of privacy data loss due to stolen or lost laptops, desktops and data storage devices. Inevitably, in each of these data loss incidents two things always occur:
- No one seems to know what sensitive data was on the lost item.
- The data was not encrypted so as to reduce or eliminate the risk of compromise.
The difference between not knowing what data was compromised, or better yet, whether it was encrypted and can therefore not be compromised, is the difference between replacing a $5,000 laptop and facing a multi-million dollar lawsuit, regulatory fines, and job loss.

Why Encrypt?
The majority of organizations employ encryption for one of two purposes – to provide strategic protection or to meet a compliance requirement. Oftentimes, a company will start with a tactical compliance initiative and evolve that into a strategic, information protection platform.
In either case, a unified Enterprise Information Protection approach to encryption makes the most economic sense. It is a far lower investment for organizations seeking to meet a compliance requirement, and it provides superior risk reduction for strategic initiatives. |
